Of Course, I Got a Puppy (Age Is Just a Number Part II)

For those that read my blog about the pet rescue lady denying me a puppy because I was too old, this is a follow-up to that story. If you don’t know the story, read Age Is Just a Number.

After being so hurt, I decided to buy a puppy from someone who breeds Cairn Terriers. I did the best research I could to find a healthy puppy. Mainly, I wanted to be sure I didn’t get a puppy from a puppy mill.

I have had 4 terriers, so I know the challenges of raising Cairn Terriers. They are the sweetest dogs and also a very stubborn breed. It takes lots of patience and you have to have the right personality to enjoy them. For some people, an adult or older dog is best. However, for me, a puppy is best because a puppy loves to play and I get to train him.

Meet Tristan as a puppy:

Why should a senior citizen have a pet

According to experts there are many reasons, especially for mental and physical health.

  1. They make us laugh. Tristan can be hilarious.

2. They reduce stress and anxiety. There is nothing like petting your dog.

3. They give us structure and routine, especially when they are puppies. We have to feed them and provide water for them, walk them, play with them, etc. They do like a schedule.

4. They help us stay in the moment. Think mindfulness.

5. They can make us healthier. They boost your chances of long time survival.

6. They help us connect with others. Everyone in the family wanted to come visit and see the new member of the family. Our neighbors greet our dog.

7. They ease loneliness. Sadness can melt away. There is a dog to talk to and to greet you when you come home.

8. They provide purpose. They look to you for food, water, exercise, and love.

9. They improve self-esteem. They make you a better person. “Be the person your dog thinks you are.”

10. They encourage movement and outdoor time. Tristan brings his toys to us, so we will play with him. He never gives up trying to get our attention.

11. They offer unconditional love. No matter what Tristan loves us.

I know that not everyone needs a dog. Some people are cat people. Some people like other animals. It’s a choice, but we tried to live without a dog after our precious MacFurgus died in October. We made it until February of this year. Now our lives seem more complete.

What kinds of outdoor markets do dogs despise? Flea markets.

  1. All of those are true! I hope we never get to the place when we can’t have a dog. We have 2 now and can’t imagine life without them! So glad you have Tristan!
