The Question Is. . .

When do you stop learning? Is it after high school, college, or on the job training? Is it at age 17, 22, or 30?

No, it’s a lifetime pursuit.

My husband surprised me the other day when he said that he had signed up to take a class at our community education program. It is Conversational Spanish. He asked if I wanted to take it with him, so I signed up, too. I needed to review my high school Spanish and feel confident enough to speak Spanish. We are both enjoying the class. It really makes us think because language is not the easiest skill for either of us.

Well, it made me think about the importance of stretching our mental capabilities. I think learning new things keeps us young.

There are so many paths open to us. I knew a lady in her 70’s taking college courses to get her Ph. D. I have a retired friend who is taking piano lessons. I am learning Tai Chi, which benefits memory as well as physical health. Another friend did an immersive study in Spanish when she lived with a family in Spain. My sister continues to grow in her artistic pursuits by taking an online painting class. I used to teach a computer class for community education and I loved teaching it. I had adult students of all ages, even those in their seventies.

There are so many opportunities for learning. Of course, there are books and online courses, but I think the best are the ones that offer social connections as well. Look for classes at senior centers, community education, and colleges. If you are a volunteer, you might have to train, such as in programs for Master Wellness Volunteers or Master Naturalists or Master Gardeners. All offer extensive and ongoing training in their fields.

I love to learn new things. My sister has pointed that out to me. I never want to stop learning. It is a lifetime goal.

Not only does learning keep you young; it inspires you and gives you purpose for the future.

So . . . go find a new interest or renew an old one. Good luck and don’t give up!

My attempt at painting. . . At least I had fun!
