From the newspaper

I found this among my many stacks of saved items.  I would appreciate comments from young and old.                                   Prayer for the Aged Lord, Thou knowest better than I know myself and I am growing older, and will some day be old.  Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every occasion.  Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody’s affairs.  Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details – give me … Continue reading From the newspaper

Fear Will Not Rule

I woke up this morning with a message from my daughter, “I’m so glad you were safe when you were there [Paris]”. My husband said, “I worry about all the trips you take.” My reply: I have to live my life and I refuse to live it in fear. That’s what these terrorists want. They want us to hunker down in fear and worry. I refuse to do it. I will not be intimidated by cowards that are sneaky and that prey on innocent civilians. My heart and prayers go out the people of France, especially those who live … Continue reading Fear Will Not Rule

Veterans Day Thoughts

I was born in June, 1945, at the end of World War II. I don’t know much about it personally because my parents or my grandparents rarely talked about it. I do know my daddy was in the European theater and that he was injured. Two of my mother’s brothers and my grandmother’s brother fought as well. My father-in-law served, too. My brother-in-law served in Vietnam. Fortunately, they all came home. As Daddy grew older, he began to talk about his service to our country, but he didn’t give much detail. I think that he and others just wanted us … Continue reading Veterans Day Thoughts

You Have to Live

Recently I was in Shenandoah National Park. The tour group I was with spent the night there and had dinner there as well. After dinner we were in for a treat. There was entertainment. A group of ladies called the Shenandoah Valley Cloggers danced for an hour. As I watched them clogging to song after song, I became aware that they were not all young. One lady looked my age. I was amazed as she clogged away, never missing a step. Oh, she may not have kicked as high as the younger ones; but she never stopped. Wow, was I … Continue reading You Have to Live

Where Is Joy?

My grandson and I saw a movie featuring characters that represented joy, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear. We love to play a game of our own making, showing how we express each emotion and telling what makes us feel each emotion. Out favorite emotion is joy. We talk about the others but after a while we always return to joy. Talking about the others too much causes us to begin to feel those emotions. Who wants to feel anger, sadness, disgust, or fear? When I was young, I decided that I didn’t want to “grow up”-not like Peter Pan, but … Continue reading Where Is Joy?

Never Give Up

What makes a person keep going even when there is adversity in life? Some people have that determination. It can be present at any age, but I think it is especially important for older people. Losing the will to go on can lead to a spiraling downward path. I know of lots of people that have this great determination.  They are great examples to us, as well as, sources of inspiration. One such person was my stepfather. He was always a hard worker and he expected everyone to have the same work ethic. He worked until the day he died … Continue reading Never Give Up

“TALK TO ME”

Let me introduce you to my mother. She was a person to admire in so many ways. She always looked her best, every hair in place, makeup perfect, clothes just right. Of course, it helped that she was beautiful and had a perfect figure, even as she aged. She had a smile and laugh that made you want to join in. Age didn’t slow her down.  She loved to travel. She was at her best when she traveled. Her back hurt, but it didn’t slow her down. Her philosophy was “I hurt no matter what I do, so I might … Continue reading “TALK TO ME”

Are You Kidding!

I dread going to see medical professionals-doctors, nurses, etc. Why? Well, there are several reasons. Some stem from childhood, but some come from the present. Last month, I went to the doctor for my annual wellness checkup. I got these questions: Do you experience confusion? ( Well, yes, but I’ve always had a little-my family says I have ADD.) How are you at driving? (Fine, everyone tells me I’m a good driver. For goodness sakes, I drive in Dallas and Tyler-what does that tell you!) Oh, you fall? (Yes, but I’m clumsy-always have been and I’ve never broken anything!) Can … Continue reading Are You Kidding!
