Nostalgia

Holidays, especially Christmas, are times to celebrate so many things. Christmas, besides being the birth of Jesus, is a celebration of love, of giving, and hope. I’m sure each of my readers has a different aspect based on his or her own experiences. For me, it’s a celebration of families and the bond we have with each other. When Christmas holidays come around, I always get a little nostalgic for the Christmases spent with my grandparents and my parents. The excitement stayed with me from early childhood through adulthood. Christmases were always special for us. How I looked forward to … Continue reading Nostalgia

The Question Is. . .

When do you stop learning? Is it after high school, college, or on the job training? Is it at age 17, 22, or 30? No, it’s a lifetime pursuit. My husband surprised me the other day when he said that he had signed up to take a class at our community education program. It is Conversational Spanish. He asked if I wanted to take it with him, so I signed up, too. I needed to review my high school Spanish and feel confident enough to speak Spanish. We are both enjoying the class. It really makes us think because language … Continue reading The Question Is. . .

Maybe Too Ambitious

This writing is for my husband, who wanted me to write about our June road trip. This was our first road trip since we’ve both retired, so it was different from any we have ever experienced-more time and fewer constraints. We both have always enjoyed road trips. Not everyone likes to sit in a car for hours, but we don’t mind because we are seeing new things, even if it is desert or plains or pine trees. We can make most anything exciting. We’ve driven to the west coast to California, the east coast to Washington, D.C., and north to … Continue reading Maybe Too Ambitious

Changes

Sometimes change is good, but sometimes it’s difficult or even traumatic. Maybe for some change is more difficult to accept than it is for others. Many older people just want to be comfortable in sameness, but change is inevitable. Lately, I have felt old. I turned 73, but age has never been a problem because I’ve always felt young at heart. I’ve always felt that I could eventually accept whatever came. Too much has changed lately. My friend that I traveled with has married, so we are not traveling as much. I do have my sister to travel with, so … Continue reading Changes

Goodbye to a Generation

My last aunt passed away this week. Now my mother, her brothers, and her sisters-in-laws are no longer with us. I’m afraid I didn’t know my Aunt Mildred as well as my other aunts. Her husband, who was my Uncle Leon and who was my mother’s middle brother, died when I was in high school. She later remarried and as so often in situations like this families drift apart. I attended Aunt Mildred’s funeral today and learned that she was 89 when she died. I discovered many things about her, such as her involvement with her community and county. Looking … Continue reading Goodbye to a Generation

Jack, Tai Chi Master

My Tai Chi instructor is 78 years old and an inspiration. My daughter told me one day that I should write about him for my blog. Of course, I then realized that he was a perfect example of what my blog is about. Jack teaches Tai Chi twice a week at the Senior Center. He started taking Tai Chi classes when he lived in North Carolina because he thought it would be fun. He took the beginner class twice before moving on to the next level. That shows how dedicated he is to learning and teaching Tai Chi correctly. . … Continue reading Jack, Tai Chi Master

As Always

As always when I travel, I’m amazed at the stamina,  determination, and excitement of others who are 70 and beyond. This time it was a trip to Greece and following it, a Rhine River Cruise.  To me the outstanding person on the trip to Greece was a 75 year old gentleman. He was tireless and nothing seem to slow him down-even after a nasty fall. He was energetic and always had the sweetest smile. At Olympia, where the Olympics originated in 776 BC, he ran twice around the original Olympic stadium. His enthusiasm for his trip to Greece was inspiring … Continue reading As Always

Another Change

Sometimes you just have to accept that you are getting older and things are changing. Yeah, I know it can be a bummer. But as the old saying goes, ” when life gives you a lemon, make lemonade” or something to that effect.  I fought this for a while, but now I’ve accepted it. I just can’t hear as well as I used to hear. It’s not too bad, or so I told myself. I DONT WANT HEARING AIDS. But I do miss words and sometimes whole conversations when there is loud noise in close places, like restaurants. My daughters … Continue reading Another Change

These Shoes Were Made For Traveling

What a mess we’ve become, but what joy we have given Donna’s feet, for together we have traveled many miles and experienced many things. We were so white and fresh last September when she first put us on her feet. Then where did she take us. We were off to Peru and Machu Picchu.  After a comfortable ride on an airplane, we landed in Lima. From then on, she rarely took us off, except at bedtime. We walked the streets of old Lima and the seaside areas of the city. We went under the old cathedral where bones of dead … Continue reading These Shoes Were Made For Traveling

Wow, I’m 72!

I’ve just celebrated another year. On my birthday I thanked God for this past year and for my health.  I feel so blessed. I just vacationed with my wonderful daughters, my husband, and 3 grandchildren. My family brings me so much joy. They all keep me young at heart.  I look back on year 71 and remember all the amazing things that I was able to do: hiking, climbing on mountains, going in caves, seeing wonderful sights all over the world. That doesn’t mean I don’t have aches and pains, but I do have determination. There are always older people … Continue reading Wow, I’m 72!
